Shall I compare thee to a childless weekend?

An ode to the weekends we use to know in ten perfectly constructed (ahem) rhyming couplets…

Friday nights were for dancing, late suppers and drinking wine
Now it’s a glass in front of the telly and in bed by half passed nine
Saturday meant late brekkie, good coffee – that truly heady mix
Now it’s for hiding in the toilet with a  double Twix
Saturday night was date night, a drink or two or ten
But now you’re watching Frozen or Toy Story 3 again

Then Sunday, a blissful day full of R and R
Now finds you wrestling a child into the car
To stand on a desolate football pitch in the pouring rain
Knowing you only have yourself (and four G&Ts) to blame

At this stage I’m supposed to say I wouldn’t change one part
And I guess I know that’s true deep down in my heart
But still it would be nice sometimes to go out for more than a swift half
Or to spend the afternoon reading a book and relaxing in the bath
Or to converse about things other than Duggee’s latest badge quest
Or Peter Rabbit’s new adventure, or which dinosaur I like the best

And I know I’ll get those weekends back and be sad that these are gone
And reminisce about when I was concussed with a cherry scone
So for now I’ll keep my peace and embrace this new weekend norm
And simply express my frustration in this rhyming couplet form

There really is some change of lifestyle from single to having children!! It’s hard to even remember those days of sleeping in or having an uninterrupted train of thought. But like you I wouldn’t change it for the world. Thanks so much for linking up with us at #BloggerClubUK x

  2. So true, I hate having just a half pint and going to bed at half nine! : ( : ( So many HALFS! lol Love this poem, funny and honest. I do have a full day and night booked in the diary to go to a beer pong event hahah, VERY excited for this day, hopefully I won’t be too hungover the next day, OH another thing we can’t be!
